Regarding David's 2.4.31 usb-storage kernel that won't work with svgalib (zgv) or any form of X in BL2:

It might be a lot simpler just to use your small usb-storage kernel for
downloading pictures and reboot to the regular 2.2.16 (or 2.2.26 - if it
works with everything now on my computer).

Then I tried Xvesa: can't establish listening socket.

Same thing with plain X and xinit.

I will try your kernel with BL3 and the Xvesa that comes with it.

Same problem with BL3 X-vesa, which is statically compiled (against uClibC?). Unless David can compile a 2.4.31 kernel that will work with the SW71 (and SW40) svgalib and X, and with Xvesa, and does not require a later libc than SW81, I don't see much point in compiling a larger custom version for BL. David, could you try out any kernel you compile to make sure it works with Xvesa from BL3?

This small one seems to be perfect for downloading from USB cameras and card readers, but it might not easily be made to work with graphics in BL2 or BL3. I don't mind rebooting after the download.

A slightly larger version of Steven's 2.2.26 usb/sound kernel, with framebuffer support added, and the ability to mount DOS and Win98 disks without specifying -t msdos or vfat, and vga=ask, and whatever else he left out going from BL2 to BL3, would be helpful. (Essentially my zimage.snd kernel plus usb). Maybe with the experimental usb-storage, if that can be made to work like the delilinux kernel, at least with some mass storage hardware such as iPod, if not with memory cards in readers or cameras.

Another list member said that the 2.2.26 kernel would boot via loop on a computer where 2.2.16 would not insmod loop (PII not AMD-K6).

I will try Steven's latest kernel with BL2 (svgalib, Xvesa, etc.).

Thanks to everyone,
Sindi
