That's Charles alright :)

My audience here found this very funny.

I am delighted to report that I have fixed the problem with my serial port.

I was under the mistaken impression that my partner had plugged the serial cable into Com3 and it was in Com1 so every time I switched it back and
forth I was setting Kermit to look in Com1 when it was in Com3 and vice versa. It took a loopback device and Checkit (after llpro failed to find a connection) to prove this.

In the meantime I checked out several DOS terminal emulators.
Cyclone works only in VGA and crashes badly.

qvt works in MDA but also crashes once in a while. It offers COM1 or COM2, and Kermit or Zmodem. I could dial my bbs and download a file with Kermit using it. It only crashes when I try to shell.

I looked at commo and managed to dial the bbs with it but have not figured out file transfer. It is 1997 (the newest) and does Com1-4 and file transfer.

cvt - no idea how to use it for anything but I can change settings.

After getting the serial cable plugged into Com1 I used DOS kermit with two changes to mscustom.ini

define -modem none (don't know if this was needed)
changed port to 1 (from 2)

I typed msk31610 (the exe file) and got a blank screen,
which until now was all I could get, and then hit the Enter key.

I had already put in /etc/securetty the four serial devices:
ttyS0
ttyS1
ttyS2
ttyS3

I was using ttyS0, to connect via dumb terminal.

I still don't know if C-Kermit can be used as dumb terminal.
Or how to do a file transfer with kermit or zmodem once connected.

Summary:

Plug in the nullmodem cable to two ports whose numbers you know.

On the target computer

/etc/inittab - uncomment the line with s1
(and change port and speed if desired - I used 115200

/etc/securetty - add ttyS0 through ttyS4 (or just the one you will use)

On the source computer (DOS)

set your terminalprogram to te same speed and the proper port
and direct connection or no modem or the equivalent.
(mscustom.ini)

start the program if you are not already in it
(msk31610,Enter - for DOS)

I probably also hit C, Enter for connect to get a blank screen.

Enter

I see Welcome to Basiclinux 2.....

I am logged into the linux computer. Only one login possible with DOS - can I log in from more than one VT with linux?

NOw to attempt kermit file transfer.

I attempted to do a kermit download of a file from a shell account to which I telnetted with the linux computer. Kermit attempted to send the file all the way through teh linux computer ot the DOS computer but some file was missing. If I had used a linux dumb terminal with kermit I could probably get the file to the dumb-terminal computer to the kermit directory (set up as download directory). When I telnetted via ethernet the file got as far as the computer running the telnet server.

I could probably also get commo or qvt working the same way but why bother.
