I did that already.

If you don't look at huge images in graphics mode it
should work fine with 12MB RAM and a 24MB swap partition
or file.

Without viewing images, the ssl version of links2 that I compiled uses about 500K of RAM and can be used to access gmail. So can uclibc lynx, but it uses four times as much RAM and does not do tables or frames.
The libc5 links-0.98-ssl you posted a link to did not work for me.
Better something that needs glibc than something that needs 4X the RAM.

Can you get links to compile with ssl support for libc5?

I do not recommend that users with 12mb RAM use glibc2.

Nor should they use a 2.4 kernel. Both of these will

I have a laptop with 16MB RAM (no way to add more) and USB
port, and none of our USB storage devices work with 2.2.
Better reduced performance than lack of USB capability.
Most of the time I would use a small 2.2 kernel with it.

reduce performance. On an old PC with 12mb RAM, this
reduction in performance can be significant. The reason
BL3 uses libc5 and a 2.2 kernel is to maximize performance
on old PCs with 12mb RAM (or less). This doesn't matter
to Sindi because she has a powerful computer, but it is
bad advice to suggest that someone with 12mb RAM install
a bigger library and bigger kernel.

links2 does not need a bigger kernel. svgalib does not either.
USB storage usually does. DOS USB support is limited but it works with some of our devices.

If someone with 12mb RAM (or less) asks for help, we
should make sure we offer libc5 and 2.2 kernel solutions.

You said you did not manage to compile links with ssl against libc5.
Other than uclibc-lynx or glibc-links2, what solution do you suggest?

Does running a glibc program somehow take up more RAM, or just more hard disk space (5MB, not suitable for loop linux)? Can you compile links with ssl against uclibc (static or dynamic) or dietlibc?

Cheers,
Steven
