I tried the 5X7 with 320x200x16 and still get the same mess. Worth a shot,
though.

David M. has located a tiny xserver (XFree86 - 800K; the
statically-linked Xvesa for Bl3 is 856K) adapted specifically
to the i810 chipset, so I'll be giving that a try.

Will post the link after I've tested it.
