In BL3 on the DFI S3 Trio32 does not work with Xvesa (Illegal instruction) but it does work with X_SVGA. (To a point, see third paragraph). In BL2 X_SVGA lost the text in icewm and rxvt (it turned into barcodes) but X_S3 server works perfectly so far.

On a 266MHz Gateway (with super-big heat sink), I tried a Trident PCI card with X_SVGA and it appeared to work until I loaded Opera. The opening window and the F2 window and the top menu are all black instead of grey background, with black text. Two more Trident cards and one Trio32 card have the same problem. The first Trident card works with Xvesa on this computer, Steven's startx and Xsetup. (I did not test the Trio32 or the other two Trident cards). I tested BL3 only.

Back to the DFI - Opera displays black on black with the X_SVGA server in BL3. I will install the SW4.0 S3 server since Xvesa is not working at all on this combination of card and motherboard. The computer is 1998, the card older.

The Trident cards are 1994. Perhaps the X_SVGA authors did not care to support 5-year-old cards. Trio32 has 1MB RAM and is therefore of similar age, maybe older.

S3 Virge with BL2 X_SVGA works fine on a newer computer. An older S3 (non-Trio) worked in a similar DFI with BL2 X_SVGA.

Avoid X_SVGA on older cards if possible, but it has been necessary with all our laptops, with customized dot clocks.

BL2 X_SVGA server in BL3 and BL2. S3 Trio32 video card 1MB RAM.
This server was working properly in BL2 in another computer with Tseng or
Matrox video cards, same hard drive.

I copied over the XFConfig file from BL3 and pointed X at the SVGA
server.

The SVGA server is from SW7.1.

Something seems to be wrong with the fonts:

Icewm loads but without any numbers where it is supposed to number the
workspaces 1 to 4, there is no date, the Ctrl-Esc menu items look like bar
codes, there is no text labelling the rxvt, and when I type in the rxvt,
what I typed is invisible. But if I type xv it loads.

X is working correctly on this computer in BL3. It works when I chroot
from BL2 to BL3. So it is a software problem.

I have 2MB of /usr/X11/lib/fonts (75dpi, PEX and misc).

I checked XF86Config and the fonts were in the right place.

What might I have messed up this time? Is there some file that tells X
where to look for fonts?

X works properly in BL3 with X_SVGA server from SW4.0 on this computer,
same XF86Config as in BL2.

I switched from SVGA to S3 X server and it worked properly now with t e
same XF86Config (VertRefresh 55-69, 640x480) as for BL3.40, which works
with SVGA server.

So the SW7.1 SVGA X server is not working right with Trio32 but the SW4.0
one is. Did someone introduce a bug (that may affect only this one
strange motherboard, which won't do Xvesa even with MS DOS himem.sys) or
omit Trio32?

Still hoping for a BL3 xpdf.
