>> opera (but there is no way to enlarge the window
to fill the screen without a window manager)

opera -geometry 800x600

This works run from the CLI:
(Xvesa -screen 800x600 &);DISPLAY=:0 opera -geometry 800x600

It does not work from a script ending in DISPLAY=:0 $*
call the script x, type x opera -geometry 800x600
or x 'opera -geometry 800x600'

Both give me the starting screen and then the opera screen, not full screen.

Did I make the script incorrectly?

Thanks. But running without a window manager also forces me to use the
mouse to change focus. I dont' think swm would help in that respect.

Cheers,
Steven
