It was easier to copy from BL2 than find the SW4.0 CD

But BL2 is glibc2. SW4.0 is libc5.

The latest xpdf contains all statically compiled binaries,

Not the one I am using.

xpdf version 3.01 7607066 bytes

libz.so.1 => /usr/lib/libz.so.1 (0x4001a000)

Where did you get this one? The 3.0 I downloaded was a 4.5MB package with a static xpdf of 2MB size. 3.1 is a 5.6 MB package. From the foolabs site. ftp://ftp.foolabs.com/pub/xpdf-3.01p12-linux.tar.gz ('staticly linked to Motif, t1lib, and FreeType'). I have not downloaded this one. p12 - patche 12?

2099221 bytes, statically linked (ELF)

so why is xpdf having problems in BL3?

Probably because it is dependent on glibc2 (libc.so.6).

Please check if xpdf works for you in BL3.40.

Yes, the xpdf from Slackware 4.0 works in BL3.

Is xli (already in BL3) not good enough?

xv does more

What can it do that xli can't? I saw some reference to
xv doing postscript (which xli doesn't); however when I
tried using xv on a postscript file, it did nothing.

xli does not display ppm or png, xv does (but so does zgv).

netpbm probably does most of the same things.

Neither netpbm nor xv come with BL3. xli is part of BL3.
There's no point installing xv or netpbm unless they are
superior in some way.

netpbm edits images (rotate, crop, concatenate, etc.), switches between formats, and prints directly to an hp or mono epson printer.
It does not display (except via a very basic svga viewer which David did not compile).

xv displays and also edits, in graphical mode. It has a large manual.
I think xli only displays.

xli about 200K, zgv about 500K (plus dependencies), xv about 1MB, netpbm is a bunch of smaller files. I have not been using xli on the laptop because it uses up RAM for X. zgv does not.

Cheers,
Steven
