I still have not figured out quite what & does

I cannot manage to get rxvt and icewm and opera

rxvt).

Start opera and rxvt with &. Start icewm without &.

How would I put this all on one line?
Xvesa & rxvt & icewm -e opera&

I try this and various other things and just get a screen with an X,
or most of the time an error message saying icewm needs X to load.

I have not dreamed up a combination that will do better than get me into Opera but when I exit there is no rxvt. Maybe I should add the icewm menu. (This is BL2 with Xvesa started via an alias).

why did someone give '7' as a sample address?

You've got to put something in the sample.
7 is as good as anything.

Not for beginners who take it literally. If there are two computers, one is 1 and one is 2. I make the server 1 and the client 2. The 7 might work if you have 7 computers all plugged together.

Do I even need the ifconfig for server - 1.1?

How are you going to get a network up without ifconfig?

The answer seems to be yes. What does ifconfig do exactly?

Can you telnet from one terminal and run X from another,
in both cases accessing the programs and/or modem
connection on the server?

Yes.

I did that.

The 486 laptop is not very handy as an Xterm because of the 4 colors and I cannot get my ethernet connection to work with startxt for some reason. Error messages. It will ping and send. I must be typing something wrong.

Xvesa keeps dumping my 80x30 console setting. Is there some way to automatically put it back when I exit Xvesa? Maybe in xinit somehow?

Cheers,
Steven
