How would I change permissions so that any user,

chmod a+w /tmp
Thanks, this worked. My book did not have a, just o (others) which I don't think worked, and u (user) and g (group).

The books are finally starting to make sense, thanks to the very kind efforts of Steven and other list members to explain the basics to me.

Another question. I downloaded a tax form which ghostscript (for DOS, Win98 and linux which I compiled) displays shifted down about a third of a page, and it also prints that way (2/3 on the first sheet of paper, the last 1/3 on the next sheet of paper). Xpdf displays it properly. If I figure out how to print with xpdf, via gs, is it likely to print as displayed by xpdf or by gs? There is a sample xpdfrc file to edit, having to do with gs font locations etc., and I forgot how to set the default gs printer but will look in my notes. I have been printing command-line with gs instead of using lpd and changing from root to user. Simpler.

Other pdf files displayed properly in gs. This one would not display more than a few lines in gs 5.10 - gave me an error message and exited.

I will be posting the compiled gs once I figure out why my uploads are crashing with a 'you don't have permission to transfer this file' at 10%.
It includes various epson devices but lvga256 and vgalib display devices refused to compile. I tested on the Panasonic KXP1124 and the Epson Stylus 800 color (st800 produced gibberish on the 800 but epson worked for both), and on HP Deskjet 500 as deskjet (probably djet500 would also work).
