I have mucked around lots of CMOSes and can disable and reenable serial
ports safely, but thanks.
How would a modem be affecting the sound card?

isapnptools was for pnp cards. This one is 1994, CT2290, and I found the
jumper settings for IRQ. It offers 10 11 12 and 15 and it is set to 15.
They are all unused by the rest of the computer. I was trying to use the
original IRQ 5 setting in my insmod line. I will see if this fixes the
problem first.
I don't see any jumpers for 220 or 240, or for DMA. I will try both
possibilities for both - only four combinations.
There is something with 3 pairs of pins all open labelled IDE settings -
iochroy (? tiny), ide 100 ide 101 - would this be 220/240?
Also something with four pairs of pins, all on (closed) - mpuen - msel -
ios0 ios1 (?).
And another set of jumper pins ifsd apsd (both on) and jye (off) - no
joystick? I was lucky enough to download drawings of two older SB boards
and there were joystick disable jumpers. The drawings disappeared from
the net a few years back.
The last two sets of pins look like something to do with speaker but there
are four holes - line out and speaker are separate, and there is a
heatsink so you can use unpowered speakers.
This is a lot easier to read than the motherboard. No flashlight needed
but I should get a magnifying glass.
If all else fails I will install the SB16 DOS software to here or see if I
can at least pick out the diagnostic program. This is a mostly linux
computer for testing things on.
