cut one large file into two pieces, part1 and part2, so that both floppy
disks end up holding about 1.2M of files. This would in theory let you
use 5.25" 1.2M floppy disks to install (not that I know of any machines
that are 486 and don't have 1.44M floppy drives).

My .bat file says nothing about strange noises, nor do I hear any.

I got the BL2 zip file I think some time in late fall and the make_fd.bat
is dated June 5, 2004. The hard drive has two files part1 and part2 with
today's date. What files ended up on the two disks in the working
2-floppy version? Maybe I can just copy them manually? But part2 does
not seem to load properly (or copy properly in most cases).

Thanks for dating your file - mine is the same date. Did you manage to
make a 2-floppy version that worked? It looks like Steven switched from
2m.com to split.exe at some point without changing the version numbers.
He will have an interesting problem to tackle when it is morning there.
Perhaps there is something we have to do in order to put the two parts
back together into one file?

I might take a few days off from linux. Tomorrow is my very last
chemotherapy (assuming it all worked) and I won't get much sleep for a few
days, so please nobody be insulted if I don't follow your good advice for
a few days. I really appreciate all this help. Basiclinux and the mail
list have helped keep me from going crazy while I avoid 'real' people
because my immune system gets knocked out 10 days out of 20 and I don't
dare get the flu.
