A google search found me Steven's instructions to look in /root/netsetup
where there were two sample files for network cards and one for plip:
insmod parport [it apparently ungzips itself]
insmod parport_pc
echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irg [for par port 1 with irq 7; some differ]
insmod plip
ifconfig plip0 192.168.1.1 pointopoint 192.168.1.2
Type on both computers and then type receive on the first one and send on
the second and then wonder what you did wrong.
As it turns out you need to reverse the order of the numbers on the second
computer. The numbers are the 'hostname'.
I tried to send and it asked for hostname.
I spent half an hour experimenting with 'hostname'.
Type hostname - you get back BasicLinux.
Read about hostname. Type hostname cw (for a computer with cw on it).
type hostname on that computer and you get cw.
Try to send to hostname cw - unknown host
The book gave examples with words not numbers, and the two computers used
them in reverse order. Instead of the words you could type a number
similar to the above ones.
So I retyped the line for the receiving computer as:
ifconfig plip0 192.168.1.2 pointopoint 192.168.1.2
[Note, it is NOT pointtopoint, the book reminded me.]
Then when asked on the sending computer for host name I typed:
192.168.1.2
And was able to specify thefile name (no wild cards but you can
send a directory full) and it sent.
Might it help to put slightly more comprehensive instructions in the
netsetup file so people who had not done this before could get it righ
the first time.
1. On the receiving computer reverse the numbers.
2. Hostname is the second number typed on the first computer.
I have installed Opera 7 on the second computer now. Thanks!
