It went OK, but I seriously think I would like to find a draft cross or dead quiet (as much as possible) ranch horse to be most safe at MSAR.
A horse doesn't need to be a draft cross or even a dead quiet horse to be a good MSAR mount. The training is the issue. Now there are probably some horses more suited to the job than others- different personalities and temperatments. In my experience I have found the more intelligent the horse the easier they are to train to MSAR work. A chopper can take off right next to my horses and they barely flick an ear. Are they dead quiet? no. Are they drafts? Nope! (although sometimes I swear THEY think they are as big!) But they are smart, they trust me, and we've done a LOT of training!
