We are in southwestern WI, growing organic peppers on IRT mulch. We mainly grow Carmen, Bianca, Red Knight. The Red Knight peppers have been pathetic, with big green plants, many flowers, and virtually no fruit. Carmen has yielded, about three fruits per plant so far, with maybe 1-2 more to harvest, which is way off previous years' yield (last year it was 9 per plant, 7 in 2008, 8 in 2007). Bianca produced about 1.8 per plant which is less than previous years' 3.5-4. The Bianca and Carmen have also been noticeablely less uniform than in other years, with some plants being much earlier and/or more fruitful than others. It is reassuring to know that other growers in the area have had some problem! I was wondering whether there was something wrong with our soil fertility (although we have tested and fertilized the same as in other years).

As a general note I will say that the Bianca and Carmen have always been the most outstanding varieties for us: high consistent yield, uniform ripening, and good flavor. We grow Red Knight to placate CSA members who want a red bell. This year may provide me the final motivation to drop it altogether.
