It really depends on where you set the probe. If you're measuring the top 1",
it'll really rise during the day, and drop at night. I've found over time
that measuring at 4" deep is a better reflection of soil temps on the root
system, and the plant. It'll still fluctuate, but not nearly as much. It's
also the standard used in most ag research unless there is something critical
about the shallow soil conditions. Keep in mind that moisture fluctuates a
lot in that shallow range too, so roots tend to be a little deeper, unless
mulch moderates moisture levels in the shallow range.
I suspect you're right though. In shallow depths we must have been really hot
at times, particularly mid-afternoon. I hope we have a more normal season
next year.
