Bill, re soil temperatures.....I've been using my soil thermometer constantly and often have soil temperatures above 100 degrees in North Central Illinois.  Last weekend, at 2 pm, the thermometer registered 98 degrees in the kohlrabi patch on straw mulched ground and 83 degrees in the shade between cabbage plants.  At this point, I'm not drawing conclusions, just recording the observations.  (Although I do plant by soil temperatures in the spring.)
