Using the walk away the pounds DVDs has let me lose 42 pounds in 10 months
but I had to limit my calories to 12 to 15 hundred a day. As we age it takes
way less food to maintain our weight. At 73 you don't have to ask me how I
know this!!! One of the things that has kept my arms in pretty good shape is
having to carry EVERYTHING up my hill using 47 steps each time I go up or
down. The last two years a fifty pound sack was to much for me to carry
without doing serious damage to my back so my local farm store puts the stuff
into 25 pound sacks for me. I will say that my knees improved a great deal
when I went from 217 to 174. There are some days when it is a BIG effort to
do stuff, but those steps make it something I have to do if I want to get to
my bed to sleep or my kitchen to eat or the food in the house. Average
during the winter is two to three trips up and down in a day, in the months I
am working in the garden and flower beds it can be between 5 and 10, but let
me say that 10 is pushing the knees to the limit.
People who are 40 years younger ask me how I do it!!! They are huffing and
puffing by the time they get to the top. It is about 110 feet up the steps
and when I get to the top I can see way over the roof of my friend whose
property I have my house on.
So far I do not have to take any medications except a natural thyroid and my
turmeric for the bad knees. It is my plan to live to be 100 and still be
able to get up and down the steps.
Way to many books to read and flowers to plant to go any sooner!

Bev; I understand completely. There isn't enough heavy work in the winter
on
a homestead to keep in shape. Yeah, I haul wood every day, but that isn't
enough, with all the extra sitting around. As we get older, it's more
important to stay in shape so we don't hurt ourselves when the work DOES
come. I was concerned to find that I couldn't lift a 100-pound feed sack
out
of the truck last summer. I could never fling one over my shoulder like the
guys at the feed store, but I could move it to where it needed to be...I've
got to get that back.

I do the Walk Away the Pounds videos. The 4 mile is a nice one, but it
takes
an uninterupted hour to do. She uses weights in the others, but not in the
4
mile for some reason, so I added the weights to that one; she uses 3 pound,
I use 5 pound hand weights. That's no where near enough weight training to
be ready for...oh, say, pulling a 300 ewe out of the mud (which I've had to
do more than once), or other everyday homestead tasks. I'd like to add more
weight training, but don't have a weight set....is doing lots of reps with
smaller weights as good for building muscle?
