7. To use the desktop modem connection on the laptop after
establishing the network connection as above:
On laptop:
route add default gw 192.168.1.2
On desktop:
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
ipchains -P forward DENY
ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.1.0/24 -j MASQ
I think I can then use the internet from the laptop via the wireless
router which is connected via ethernet cable to the desktop, without
needing to run telnetd. Except for a new problem:
While the computers were still connected, I went online with the desktop
and was at sdf shell account typing this mail, and suddenly lost my DNS
resolving power and my use of the internet connection. /etc/resolv.conf
contained the line 192.168.1.1 and nothing else. I copied back the
correct file. This happened several times and hangup and redial did
not fix it. Now I cannot resolve DNS numbers on that computer and
I switched to another desktop. I will try it again after rebooting.

resolv.conf keeps getting changed to 192.168.1.1 (I think udhcpc may be doing this so I will ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.2 on the desktop).
I am online with the desktop and I made an ip-on script which does the echo and the two ipchains lines, and a gw-script with the route line (route add default gw 192.168.1.2 - the IP number of my desktop which is connected to the internet).
This worked last year between two desktop swith ethernet cable.
I can ping between the desktop and laptop.
I cannot use the internet from the laptop - I cannot ping an address or access it via a browser.

says to run links on the computer on the left (in this case the laptop where I ran gw-on). Host not found.
I am using the BL2 kernel that I compiled to support ipchains. I am using a standard BL3 kernel in the laptop, loop BL3.40.
What did I do wrong?
Another small problem:
mini_httpd is still working well for file transfers.
I used links with it, or lynx.
pure_ftpd also works. I run these on the desktop.
I used kermit/ftp with it because the help for ftpput is not understandable and I don't have my notes handy.
help says
ftpput [options] remote-host remote-file local-file
ftpput -u login -p password 192.168.1.2 test test - does not work.
send/receive keeps telling me:
nc: connect: Connection refused.
I don't think it worked at all via this wireless connection.
I rebooted several times. BL2 to BL3. It pings fine.
