It's about half that. A typical Xserver for BL3 is 3mb.
Xvesa, of course, is much smaller and you are welcome to
keep using it. However, Xvesa is not perfect and you may
run into a fishhook or two.
xfbdev plus matroxfb plus two vts is about 2MB, but as for rivafb
it crashes badly (you need to reboot) if you switch vts before unloading xfbdev. David said it might not be compiled right (against uclibc).
Xvesa is much better behaved except for objecting to himem.sys and emm386 and mouse drivers loaded in DOS.
