I found two sites carrying IDE memory card readers for multiple types of memory cards, for $54. One of them required Win98, the other would work with DOS (but they were out of stock). They are ATAPI. Does this mean you could also mount them like a CD-ROM drive under linux? The device fits into a bay (3.5 or 5.25").
It would be a lot cheaper to use a USB kernel with BL2, if that would work. We got a USB mouse working with a USB kernel in the full SW81 (but it worked just as well with a PS/2 adaptor and the regular kernel for BL2). Other than change kernels, what is required to use a USB camera with linux? Or a USB anything? (I know the USB scanner would need SANE).
For $54 I could buy a nice used serial Olympus camera.

Some of the new ones use CF cards (which can be read
on a laptop via a cheap CF-PCMCIA sleeve). BL3 does
not currently have a PCMCIA module for reading CF
cards, but it would be a lot easier to add than USB
(and it could be used on any laptop with a PCMCIA slot).
I believe many digital cameras store pictures as jpegs
(which BL3 is currently able to display).
How would one use one of these cameras with a desktop computer and BL?
Are there ways to add card readers for other types of memory cards?
You don't really use the camera itself: you use a removable memory card
(the compact flash type in Steven's example). You insert the removable
memory card that contains the photos into a device that accepts such
cards, which in turn is hooked to your computer. Most of these "multi-card
readers" (they read several different types like secure digital, multi
media, etc) are made to connect via USB. I think some internal multi card
readers hook to an IDE cable though. In that case, the stock BL3 kernel
should work. But those internal multi card readers are not hot-pluggable:
at the least, they would require manual mounting/umounting to be able to
deal with media insertion and extraction while the machine is running. I
recall seeing somewhere PCMCIA multi card readers as well, btw.
