I could be wrong, but I don't think glibc has anything to do with
https. As long as it's compiled with SSL, Lynx (and links) should
work.

The ppp.tgz package in Slackware-3.5 contains both pppd 2.2 and 2.3. Is
the latter glibc2? In Slackware-7.1, where I got my kernel, the ppp.tgz
package only has pppd 2.3. Do you think I might be able to solve my
problem with ppp 2.3, and the glibc2 libraries from Slackware-3.5?

Both are libc5.
If you want to use glibc2 one from SL7.1, you need to install glibc2
library. In /contrib there is glibc-2.0.5c for SL 3.5

In BL2 Steven has changed also pppof script - but it shouldn't matter
in your case.

It's OK, it's another x-configurator program

I'm afraid I've never heard about running X in a Hercules monitor. Don't
know if it can be done
