I used the iomega.s bzImage.

Done. BL2 has no problem making ppp connections with my kernel. Do you
still think I should do the debuging? Can we replace BL1's pppd with
the one from BL2?

Thanks again,

I have a mono VGA monitor (plugged into a VESA 1.2 compatible, 1M RAM,
Trident 8900C card) and a mono TTL monitor (plugged into a Hercules MGA
card). VC1 and VC2 are VGA, VC3 and VC4 are Hercules (HGC).

I have never installed X before.

The O'Reilly Running Linux book says to use
1. XF86Setup to run a graphical config program that will give you 16
color VGA (which I don't even want but I guess it would not hurt the
monitor) or if that does not work
2. ConfigXF86 for a text mode program.

I don't have either of these (at least typing their names does nothing,
and I cannot find them with find -name ConfigXF86).

3. Edit the XF86Config file created by copying over the same name .eg
file.

I attempted to do 3. and then I edited xinitrc substitutnig icewm for twm
and remakring out xclock.

When I type xinit (or startx), I get a patterned background with an X in
the middle of it on the VGA monitor. (If I switched to HGC the X would
probably be there). No Xterm. I can exit with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
Where might I have gone wrong? This is all new to me.

I uncommented any lines referring to VGA2 or mono. I did not change
keyboard (perhaps I should? I am using one with 10 F keys on the left).
I left the monitor setting defaults. It all seems to work except no
xterm.
