You are right - I'm using ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro :)
I'm getting 1024x768x16bit color on Slack 3.9, so it should
also be available on newer Xserver in Slack 7.1.

I personally recommend to download x1/xset.tgz (600kb)
and install. It will install XF86Setup - a GRAPHIC tool to set
proper XF86Config. It's graphic and typical users find
it more useful than text-based xf86config.

_THE_MOST_ IMPORTANT during configuring XF86Config
is to know parameters of your monitor. Monitor sync rates:
horizontal and vertical.

Mine for Samsung SyncMaster 152s LCD are:
HorizSync 30-61
VertRefresh 56-75

Setting with XF86Setup is quite easy:

After running it will ask you for switching to graphical mode
(vga16 has to be installed). Agree. It should be nice if you
have a mouse - but as if you have ATI 3D Rage Pro, you probably
have a ps/2 mouse and Celeron based machine.
Click on "Card" and choose "ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro" (click on it).
Click on "Monitor" and type _your_monitor_ parameters.
(Mine can do till 75Hz)
Click on "Mode selection". Click on "1024x768". Click on "16bpp"
Click on "Done", Click on "Okay".

XF86Setup will now switch to "1024x768" mode, if you see nothing
or sth messy - your monitor parameters are not proper.

Enjoy

Chris (now working on BL 1.10 based on Slack 3.9
and directory structure from BL 2.x)
