Since I want to use Hercules mono I installed xmono.tgz. Do I also
need xvg16.tgz installed for the mono VGA monitor? And should it
automatically recognize which to use when I switch VTs (and monitors)?

The O'Reilly book calls it ConfigXF86. I did not find that. I checked
just now and there IS an xf86config. First typo I have found in the book.
I will try again with this program.

Found this one - it consists of the line 'icewm'. Thanks.

If this is working, should I see an xterm against the patterned
background or just an X?

In the other linuxes initx and startx did the same thing. The book says
startx runs programs 'startx is a frontend to xinit. You can still use
xinit, which gives you precise control about what exactly is started but
requires you to start all needed programs manually'. I tried xinit icewm,
which is the format that worked in redhat and suse, and even xinit -e
icewm, but no xterm. 'Startx starts the X server and runs the commands
found in the file .xinitrc in your home directory.' (icewm) xinitrc will
be used if there is no .xinitrc. I don't see any lines in .xinitrc for
starting an xterm - should I add something to .xinitrc for this? I also
tried xinit xterm and I think xinit -e xterm.

I just installed the 16color package and it still gives no xterm.

I might try deleting .xinitrc and seeing if xinitrc works to give an xterm
or two.

Thanks for the pointer to .xinitrc (which I think you already told me all
about before, sorry about memory lapse).
