After a 20 minute download I typed installpkg plus the name of the links
file and it installed itself just fine as a 7.2M file in /usr/local/bin,
where it is all by itself. I renamed it to links219 after I realized that
typing links got me links 0.93 as usual. I was able to go online with
links 2.1.9 and view an image (it is using the same configuration file as
links 0.93, which I set up with seejpeg). I then went to my bank site,
which requires javascript, and tried to register. No support for https
URLs. So I tried lynx 2.8.3 and it also does not support https (at least
the version compiled for Slackware 7.1 does not). So I tried lynx 2.8.4
at my bbs and it does https but not javascript. Now I remember why I
wanted my bbs to upgrade to Lynx 2.8.4 - it was not the unicode. (Or
maybe they had also compiled lynx 2.8.2 without SSL, I think you get a
choice).

I still cannot access my bank online without a Windows browser (Opera).
I think it will be worth installing Opera on BL, some version, just to
have something that handles https.

It may also be worth upgrading to glibc6 2.2.5 if that is what it takes to
do https with Lynx 2.8.4. Or glibc6 2.3.1 if that will let me use the
latest Opera (assuming the latest Opera has the sense not to download
images when you tell it not to display images). They claim Opera 7 is
smaller and faster than Opera 6.

Anyway, I will be testing out Links 2.1.9 at sites other than my bank and
many thanks to Jean Pierre for the only non-X javascript browser. (There
is one site that I am supposed to ftp translations to that needs
javascript).
