i propose to use my home server for now ( 56k ) with ngircd running on a p200
with drinou-linux f5nlg.mine.nu port 6667
and the channel #basiclinux

but if there is interest it will better to put it on a better irc server ...

Yes, I am running in 16-color VGA. This machine has a Trident TVGA 9000i
512 KB ISA video card in it. Seems to me that's about the right sort of
card for the BL2 target machine. So far, I like Links. I have a bit more
testing to do with it, but so far it seems to me a better choice for BL2
than other browsers we've talked about/tried. Having SSL capability would
be a big plus, though. I don't think we could find a graphical browser
that would perform really well (mainly in terms of speed) on such a
machine as this, so we should probably be looking for a browser that
performs tolerably. So far, Links2 seems like a good candidate. Were I
to use this machine on a regular basis though, I would avoid using Links2 or
other such graphical browsers, only firing up such in case of absolute
need. I would try to use something like Links 0.93 or Dillo for most web
browsing. In any case, if Links2 does prove to be the right browser for
BL2, it should probably be presumed that others will run into the color
problems I and others have had when using it. What then are some
resolutions to the color problems? It seems I can't use Steven's solution
(DefaultColorDepth 16) since, so far as I understand it, I'm sort of stuck
with VGA-16. I can't say how helpful JP's suggestion would be, since I
don't really understand it: if I, an intermediate Linux newbie, am
challenged technically by this solution, the BL2 target audience might be
even more daunted. What other solutions might we provide to those
novices who might try BL2 with this graphical Links on similar low-power
hardware and experience the wierd color transposition I've seen?

A card that does 16-color VGA will do 256-shade grey. Will the Xserver do
the same?

If I have installed both xmono and the 16-color vga .tgz file, should I be
trying to run X on the Hercules or the VGA monitor? I think I have missed
something in the XF86Config file about choosing the Xserver.

I don't see any blue (of course, I am running it in mono) or bars at the
bottom or penguin and if I did, how would I click without a mouse? You
said icewm does not need a mouse. I see a patterned background and an X.
No white rectangle (xterm).

Fvwm gives you a menu with Alt-F1. I will look for a manual page for
icewm.

Then I am obviously not running icewm.

Yes, that was the first one I installed, and all the others, and also
cyrfonts.tgz.

How did you get X to work with 13M instead of 55M? (What sorts of things
did you leave out and what do other people use them for?).

I may try removing the Hercules card and starting over, and use the
configuration program this time.

I will read more about this - I have probably omitted some crucial step
somewhere. We also have the configuration file and .xinitrc in SuSE
(where it is working) to compare with.
