I grew Rainbow from Johnny's for the first time this past season and was pleased with the results. Germination seemed consistent and the mix sized up similarly enough for my needs...although I sell most of my carrots as babies. I thought the white variety had a hint of mouthwash taste but was reasonably pleased with the flavor of the other types in this mix and will definitely grow it again.

Thanks, I was looking at the Rainbow at Johnny's. I am always concerned about planting a blend of varieties, that one will grow faster, one tastes better, another one fails to germinate. I would prefer one variety of each and then mix them as I bunch them up. I do this with lettuce and I feel I get a better product. It also looks really neat! But I may give it a try and see. --- On Mon, 11/15/10, Rob Wallbridge <rob AT songberry.ca> wrote:

I’ve been experimenting with non-orange carrots for two or three years now. So far, my favourite varieties are “Rainbow” which produce white, yellow, and light orange carrots, and Purple Haze – both available through Johnny’s. I haven’t had much luck with some of the other purple/red varieties. I find that mixed bunches of the two varieties sell quite well, though the Purple Haze take longer to size up than the Rainbow.
Cheers,
Rob

On the request of one of our kids, they saw yellow carrots and wanted to try them. I ordered Amarillo from Bakers Creek. It was the last place I ordered from. I am happy with the color and flavor, but they haven't been real consistent on size. I have taken them to the last two markets and I sold out both weeks. I am making plans for next year and want to add some yellow, purple and red carrots to the mix. I have been really successful with Nelson, Mokum, and YaYa orange carrots. Any recommendations on varieties would be great.
I am planning on seeding these carrots in my high tunnel in February/March with hopes of selling carrots in early May.
