Errol's comments were vaguely reminiscent
of comments made by retailers complaining
about the discount retailer in their area.

Sometimes the guy next door is not selling in
order to achieve a momentary profit, but to
gain a customer.

I know the case of the backyard gardener is
different, but all farmers selling directly to
consumers have to understand that price is
really one thing you have no control over,
except what you offer your own goods for.

If your produce or other farm products are
not "branded" in some way so that buyers
and prospective buyers perceive them as
different from what the next guy sells, you
are stuck with the average market price.

If the other farmers in your market collusively
raise prices to increase your profits, you may
not get a visit from the gendarmes but you
may find you sell less because your customers
go elsewhere.

Consumers are not stupid (well, some are), they
are mostly misinformed. That is why farmers
who do a better job of informing, read marketing
and advertising to their consumer prospects,
are likely to enjoy receiving higher prices and
selling out earlier than farmers who do not spend
time or money informing effectively.

Spend your time building your farm product brand
and pricing will be less of a problem to worry about.
