If you're trying to ease yourself into Death Cab, also try Bright Eyes, Cursive and Desaparecidos (http://saddle-creek.com). Three great indie bands that don't have much in common except the fact that they come from Omaha, Nebraska. Bright eyes can get a little "I hate myself and want to die" sometimes, but the songwriting is excellent. Cursive and Desaparecidos are straight ahead rock bands. And for the record, Death Cab hasn't had a decent album since "We have the facts and we're voting yes."

If you want to try the alt side of indie rock, check out "Neutral Milk Hotel" and "Olivia Tremor Control" (http://www.elephant6.com/). Both are a bit weird, but really, really catchy. "Dirty Three" also rocks.

If you wanna go the liz phair route, try Belly ("Sweet Ride: Best of Belly" is a good place to start), Tanya Donnelly, Throwing Muses, and the Breeders. Oh - and Verruca Salt's "Resolver" and "American Thighs" are a must.

On the more acoustic side of things, I would highly recommend the Alison Kraus & Union Station Double Live CD featuring Jerry Douglas. John Prine is also a big favorite. Try his new album "Souvenirs" which is a collection of his favorite songs over the last 20 years. If you want to swing to the Bluegrass end of things, Earl, Flatt and Scruggs just released an album called "The Three Pickers" that is really, really good.

If you want to go the way of Outkast, I like Digable Planets, The Roots, Black Eyed Peas, etc. - basically any hip-hop band who plays their own instruments.

Other random bands you should check out: Everything but the girl, The Pogues, Submarine, Mark Farina's Mushroom Jazz, and, just for fun, fischerspooner.

It seems as if my $0.02 has turned into my $1.25. Hope you can find some of it useful...

I am addicted to iTunes. And to CDBaby.com. Therefore, I have been buying a
lot of music lately. As always, I love to get recommendations. Got any? This
is a wonderfully diverse crowd here on our little list and it's a given that
topics that are off topic are fine, so I'm casting my Quest For Bands I Don't
Know About Yet line here (and elsewhere, but that's not the point).

As a point of reference, I am big in to The Shins, Outkast, Kelis,
Electralane, Liz Phair (before she got sucky), The Carpenters, French Kicks,
and Pinback these days. And I'm trying to get excited about Death Cab For
Cutie, but that's gonna take a few more listens. Not that I eschew all other
genres, these are just what I'm big on at the moment.

Perhaps an INW soundtrack could come of this. It would probably have to be
about a dozen CDs long, but still...

Write me offlist if you want.
