Some 40% of US electricity production comes from coal.
Some 80% of the US population lives in cities.
Shouldn't the cities set an example for the rest of the population and do
their part in reducing coal emmissions?
It has to start somewhere. And the government needs to LEAD. But the
government doesn't lead - it wants to keep its lights on, and just tax people
into attempting to get the people to turn their lights off.
It isn't logical to me to complain about coal emmissions, and then not turn
off wasteful electricity usage. To me, you can't have both. You either have
lights in the cities with coal emmissions or nuclear waste or attempt to
convert to a different depleting energy source like natural gas, or you have
cleaner air and start turning off the light in the cities.
Every taxpayer should start pressuring their local governments to reduce
energy usage simply by turning off most of the lights.

I thought the point of streetlights was to light the city streets at night?
We don't have them out here, but when I lived in the city, if I had to walk
through unlit streets, I'd have never left my house after dark.

If nobody left their houses after dark, there would be no reason to have
streets lit, would there...
