Yesterday evening, I went out and sat in my little stand, and while I
was stealthy enough that the nearby horses did not notice me, I did not
see anything...towards the end of the 'sit', the wind picked up, so
maybe I got winded. I fogged up the scope as darkness encroached and I
tried to make out what I thought was a doe, but no, it was just a trick
of light.
This morning, dh went up behind the house on the hill, trying to catch
them traversing the low area, but he did not see anything either.
This evening, dh went west of the woodland pond, near the logging road,
but again, nothing.
Neither of us even heard a far off shot, which is kind of strange
because during deer season, gunshots are frequent.

Your observation about your senses are interesting. I believe, when I
am out there, that I can hear a deer coming over the ridge, when the
reality is that one snuck up on me...lol
I like your idea of a carpet scrap. Yesterday, the wood of the perch
was sopping wet, and I was almost shivering before I came in and it
wasn't even that cold.

So Keith, you hunt from a tree stand? Do you have a permanent stand or
do you have a climber that you tote with you into the woods? We have a
climbing stand, but the kid is the only one who uses it.
Congratulations on getting your deer...too bad you had to track it down
the way you did. I wish you had a longer season. I wonder why you don't.
It is funny that you mention smoking. When I was 'taught', I was told
that once you shoot and you 'know' he is dead, smoke a cigarette to calm
down and by that time, the deer's reflexes have relaxed and if he was
still alive before, he most certainly would have expired while you
smoked. I was told that was a safe thing to do, to wait before you
field dressed or touched the deer. So there I was, yesterday, thinking
about how to measure 10 minutes without a cigarette when your adrenaline
is pumping(that always distorts time), wondering how non-smokers gauge
time...
Pickled heart?
We always roast them...lots of garlic and soy sauce.

I have always hunted on my own land. How many places do you hunt?

I kicked him up several times during the trek but only caught
glimpses of the stubborn, brave, noble deer; until, willing himself
to his hooves one last time, he started hobbling away. I fired again.
He dropped onto the white ground eighty yards ahead. As I neared I
could see he was still breathing and staring defiantly in my
direction. I walked close, fired my last bullet and ended my season
with his life. My watch showed three-fifteen but tonight I learned it
was running thirty-minutes slow. I won’t change the tag.

I was kneeling, filling out the ear tag when I heard, “Did you get
him, Keith?” I knew by the sound of his voice it was my friend’s
neighbor, Jack. He stood between two trees a hundred feet to my
right. I said, “Yes I did, Sir.” Jack said good job and walked away,
perhaps thinking I was saying a prayer of thanks. I was. I also drank
my last cup of coffee and smoked half a cigarette before getting off
my knees.

I had brought a camera and took a few less painful shots before field
dressing the buck—an eight-point. The latex gloves I carried in my
pack saved me from scrubbing my hands with snow. I saved the heart in
a plastic baggy; will pickle it in memory of Grandpa Whalen.

I dragged the buck to the front yard of my friends and visited a few
moments. Rene helped load it into my truck. I thanked him for
allowing me once again to harvest food for my family and another fine
memory from his land. I will return with a more proper expression of
my gratitude after butchering. _______________________________________________ Homestead list and
