ppp-on told me my system lacks kernel support for ppp.

This is the error you get when you forget
to insmod slhc and ppp. pppsetup does it
automatically, but it doesn't last.

I reealize this, but as I said, I FIRST did

insmod slhc
insmod ppp
insmod lt_modem
insmod lt_serial

I also first made the device /dev/ttyLT0 and set eznet.conf to use it (and the correct phone number etc.) with pppsetup, edit.

After all the above, ppp-on gave me that error.

Every time I checked, the modules were still inserted.

BL3.40 dialed with lucent modem, BL3.50 did not (ext2 version both times).

I could chroot from BL3.50 fd or ext2 to BL2 or BL3.40 and without loading any additional modules, dial with eznet and it worked.

Might some file in disk2.tgz be corrupt

I doubt it.

(What is the linux equivalent of scandisk for floppy disks?)

e2fsck for ext2-formatted floppies. For dos-formatted
floppies you might as well use scandisk.

My floppy was perfect, I checked that too (with scandisk).

The provided resolv.conf DNS numbers did not. Unknown
host for telnet or ping. Were these defaults supposed
to work everywhere?

They worked last time I checked (several months ago).
However, there's no guarantee that public DNS addresses
are going to last. It's safer to use your ISP's DNS
address.

I changed to a set of four different ones. Please check your numbers and if they don't work, change them in the posted version or add a note that they need to be changed to some known working ones.

I will try in BL3.40 with the kernel from BL3.50.

There is no difference in the kernel. It's the same
in BasicLinux 3.50.

BL3.40 dialed after I chrooted to it from BL3.40, having loaded all the modules in 3.50. 3.50 complained the kernel does not have ppp support.

David Moberg or Stephen Clement, please check this out.

I have several lucent modems now, and several computers without ISA slots. I have external modems but they are 1997 or 1998 and not stable on bad phone lines like the newer pci ones.

Something affecting ppp has changed between BL3.40 and BL3.50. I tried both the 3.50 beta version that I downloaded earlier and installed to ext2, and the recent floppy version, with the same modules and kernel that worked in 3.40 and 2.1, same pppd and eznet. What else might differ? Is busybox involved in dialing?

Sindi

Cheers,
Steven
