~/<#>wget ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/
Connecting to ftp.slackware.com[207.173.172.131]:21
wget: RETR: /pub/slackware/: Not a regular file

~/<#>wget ftp://slackware.oregonstate.edu/pub/slackware/
Connecting to slackware.oregonstate.edu[64.50.236.52]:21
wget: RETR: Failed to open file.

RETR is not the same command as LIST. It needs the address
of a specific file.

>From RFC959:

RETRIEVE (RETR)

his command causes the server-DTP to transfer a copy of the file,
specified in the pathname, to the server- or user-DTP at the
other end of the data connection. The status and contents of the
file at the server site shall be unaffected.

LIST (LIST)

This command causes a list to be sent from the server to the
passive DTP. If the pathname specifies a directory or other
group of files, the server should transfer a list of files in the
specified directory. If the pathname specifies a file then the
server should send current information on the file.

The above. For starters. Not that I would expect the wget
in busybox to full-featured, but this is pretty basic.

If you know the exact file, I'm sure it works fine. But it
doesn't seem to allow one to find out what's available
on the server.

That's a _severe_ limitation.
