This one works for the manpages with plain text tags (are there
more than one kind like that?). I used pure-ftp.8.gz. I don't
have an example of the other kind.

Try the man page for David Moberg's mplayer, about 2 MB download for the
whole package at my website or his (which site is it at now David?).
It has upper ascii characters which man2html botches. I think he also included a plain-text version you can check against.
