That ftp server doesn't need to be limited to a directory tree. In its
default configuration, it won't accept anonymous log-in. My wife has to log
in with her own username and password, and then she gets to access ONLY the
directory where she has permission - in this case only her /home/"wife"
directory, where she has control over her own stuff.

Pure-ftp is pretty secure that way - in fact it is the ftp server that
both my domains have installed as default.
