Another regular problem is the announcment of the nameservers. Too often the ISP doesn't announce the nameservers in a sane way even though your connection runs fine. So if a ping 141.1.1.1 works but ping cns1.cw.net doesn't you need to add the nameservers by hand to your /etc/resolv.conf. Either ask your ISP for the nameservers or check another system which works flawless.
