All Linux needs is username, password and telephone number.
It's also nice to have their DNS address (but it's not essential).

Another regular problem is the announcment of the nameservers. Too
often the ISP doesn't announce the nameservers in a sane way even though
your connection runs fine. So if a ping 141.1.1.1 works but ping
cns1.cw.net doesn't you need to add the nameservers by hand to your
/etc/resolv.conf. Either ask your ISP for the nameservers or check
another system which works flawless.

I have found that any DNS numbers (from the same country you are in, anyway) will work, you don't need the ones from your particular ISP. Most ISPs post their servers at their website.

Windows dialup networking does not require that you give it nameservers. It uses bootp or udhcpc or something. Do the 'modern' linuxes need DNS servers?

If you don't care about whatever software and partitions are already on your laptop computer, there is no harm in playing with fdisk and mke2fs on it, from linux floppy boot disks.
