This will break in the near future. Making DNS accessible outside their dedicated networks is prone for DDOS-attacks and will be faded away over the next years.

Windows dialup networking does not require that you give it nameservers. It uses bootp or udhcpc or something. Do the 'modern' linuxes need DNS servers?

In fact it uses ms-chap and works with nothing else. Usually this also works well with linux but not always as it needs some integration into the ip-up-scripts.
