  • Subject: [BL] BL3.40 swapfile unknown option dd if=/dev/zero
  • Date: Tue, 7 Feb 2006 23:08:42 +0000 (UTC)

I copied to laptop, using BL3.32 (because the posted 2.2.26 network card module does not work in BL3.40), both BL3.40 and BL2.1. I edited fstab before rebooting to change the ext2 partition, and also the boot files, to which I added mem=32M (because with the full 64MB it crashes a lot).
It all seems to work fine.

I followed instructions (that I found for puppylinux) to make a swap file in Bl2.1 in the linux partition.

dd if=/dev/zero of=swapfile bs=1024 count=32k
(for a 32MB swap file; we have 32MB RAM)

It worked in BL2 and I put 'swapon swapfile' into rc.S.

The dd of BL3.40 is busybox and it did not work.
unknown option dd if=/dev/zero

Trying to copy the swapfile itself from BL2 to BL3 caused a crash.

Can I mount BL3 while in BL2 and use BL2 dd to make a swapfile in BL3?
Or is there some other way to make a swapfile with BL3 itself other than adding a larger dd?

I got the network card to stop refusing connections by pinging from one computer to the other after 'send' did not work, then tried send again.
Another time even this did not work.

I have three kernels for use with BL3.40 - 3.32 kernel (2.2.16) for the network card, 3.40 kernel (2.2.26) for general use, and David's 2.4.31 kernel for USB storage (which I think takes up more RAM and does not have the network module, but maybe the one from SW10.2 will work with it).

We will to try to do everything but compile with 3.40 (with libc6 upgrade). First sound (in BL2, already has the modules for it).

The audio chip is sbpro (CT1335)? SBPro is only 8-bit. I tried sb.o with standard settings: insmod sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 (and I tried also dma16=1).

It told me my card is several years old with DSP version just 3.01 and only
8-bit

I tried to play a .wav file anyway:
DMA (output) timed out - DRQ/IRQ config error?
I got this same error when I did not specify dma16 with an sb16.

Why would a 266Mhz computer use an 8-bit sound chip?
