I edited only rc (to do start and insmod ppp and slhc)
and set the comport to ttyS1 in eznet.conf.
The little phone-jack part that plugs into the card
lights up (power light is on) but it does not seem to dial.

Don't you normally hear the dialing tones
when it dials?
I don't recall. This little gadget does not look large enough to house a speaker, unless a regular modem card for desktop. No flashing lights when I tried to dial. There are four lights, and the power light was on.

Would it help to post part of dmesg?

Yes. Everything output by cardmgr plus anything
related to comports.

Here is the relevant part of dmseg. I will try dialing with pcmcia next and post that later (also info about beeps). Just got ftpput working again to upload this much.

BTW does cardmgr beep twice at system startup?
Details please of anything from cardmgr.

I tried to delete everything not related to serial ports or PCMCIA.
External modem is working in com1. There is only one serial port visible.
insmod slhc and insmod ppp automated in rc, along with the start line to load the pcmcia modules. There are four modules loaded besides slhc and ppp one of which is serial_cs (unused), the others loaded by 'start'.

SHould I load pcnet_cs instead of serial_cs?
I have no pcmcia experience except with BL3 and two other computers. This modem worked in one of them.
