We have a 28.8 Sportster pcmcia modem that will not work in a Compaq 486 laptop, tho three other modems work in it and this one works in three other computers. cardmgr finds it as /dev/ttyS1 but eznet won't dial.

I just tried with kermit. set line /dev/ttyS1, set speed 57600
set carrier-watch off connect

At this point normally you can give it 'at' commands such as ath1 (this gives a dial tone with the other modems) or ati0.

This modem does not react to any 'at' commands. That is why it will not dial. It won't do anything except get recognized as a 16550A /dev/ttyS1.

We will use the 14.4K pcmcia modem or an external serial modem (which does work).
