Ok. I'll look into that.

There were actually a couple of problems here: I should have run
ldconfig--that's true. More importantly though, I had forgotten about
installing icewm :). I installed that and, just to be double sure, ran
ldconfig afterward. Now the graphical installation routine starts and I
get partway through. So, some progress on that front. There is some
wierd keyboard mapping though: when I made a mistake and pressed the
backspace key, I get a plus sign (+) over the underslash sign (_). Some
other keys also don't do what they're supposed to. And I see in the xterm
where I've started the instllation from things like "Warning: ... not
found while parsing '<key> osfDown:MenuTraverseDown()'. I have no idea
what to make of that, or if it presents any kind of problem or is related.
The installation eventually peters out, but I think that's because of awk
not being present. I'll install gawk and see what happens next.

Found that in a post in the archive from Sindi, I think.

You're welcome. I'm hoping I meet with some success eventually, but I've
certainly had my share of frustrations with Linux in all its guises. I'll
report back after I find out what installing gawk does/doesn't do.
