Thanks, David and Steven.
On the computer (I call it ASUS, because of the motherboard) running (at
this time) Windows 98 First Edition, I added TCP/IP protocol for the
Ethernet adapter, and set the IP address to 198.168.1.3
"I want NetBIOS over TCP/IP" and "I want to give others
access to my files" are both set.
Rebooted, per message box.
And right-clicked drive E: and set sharing to full, no password, shared
as E
On the other computer, let's call it dell , currently running BL3.32,
I edited /etc/hosts to include 192.168.1.3 asus
ifconfig -a results in
eth0 bla bla inet addr:192.68.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255
Mask:255.255.255.0 bla bla
The computers are linked by a crossover cable between ethernet cards.
The light on it is lit.
At least after I say on dell
ping asus
Which results in stuff like
64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=0 ttl=128 time=0.5 ms
but when I say
smbclient \\\\asus\\E
the response is
Added interface ip=127.0.0.1 bcast=127.255.255.255 nmask=255.0.0.0
error connecting to 192.168.1.3:139 (Connection refused)
Connection to asus failed
Please let me know what additional info to provide so as to diagnose and
fix this.
Oh, I just opened a DOS Window on asus , and said
ping 192.168.1.1
Pinging 192.168.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=255
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=255
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=255
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=255
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms
Thanks a lot,
Sheldon Isaac
