No, lo is already configured in one of your startup scripts.
If you do 'ifconfig', you will see it there.

Nope. The slhc and ppp modules are for ppp, not ethernet.
Just to make things confusing, there is something called
pppoe (ppp over ethernet) but that is something else.

It's for automatically configuring your network address
(i.e. substitute for ifconfig).
