slhc is a helper module for ppp. ppp is the protocol
used to link to your ISP over the phone line.

dhcp is a tool for automatically configuring your
network card (instead of ifconfig). It relies on
a dhcp server running the network. When you execute
the dhcp client (included in BL2 and BL3), it sends
a message to the network (out eth0) asking the dhcp
server to give it an address to use.
