I have not checked the realtek with net.i, but I did check out one of my
two Kingston PCI cards (which are apparently 100Mb).
First I copied the bzImage from /cd/kernels/bare.i/ to the BL2 directory
and booted with that in one of the three ITBD computers that sometimes
won't boot linux. It booted this image perfectly and let me log in.
I had copied it from the CD via DOS.
I looked at dmesg and there is a line about PIIX4: not 100% native mode.
What does this mean? COuld it be causing the linux boot problems?
There is another line about tulip.c.....
eth0= Lite-On PNIC-I at 0x6500 IRQ 10 (which is free on this machine)
So this net.i kernel seems to be implying that I do need tulip.o, which I
determined also by looking up the card name online as suggested by James,
and by looking in the online linux HOWTO.
I tried to copy tulip.o to the misc directory but the CD-ROM drive would
not access the CD. I tried again in DOS, where it accessed about 1 time
out of 10. Spent 30 sec or so trying each time, lighting, whirring.
I tried another CD-ROM drive, a genuine Creative. It would not work at
all, immediately told me so every time (20 tries). Both drives had tested
good elsewhere.
I plugged in the Quad Speed CD-ROM drive that came with that computer and
it worked immediately. Maybe someone already had this same problem and
fixed it with a slower drive? (Used computer).
So this computer (233MHz AMD DFI ITBD) is also fussy about CD-ROM drives
as well as fussy about booting linux. In one case it has an intermittent
(timing?) problem.
But today it is booting linux every time. I may use it, with that quad
speed drive, and move back the drives and cards to it from the P166 (for
the fifth move of these particular components) which did not have space
for all the drives I wanted. First I will see if it is doing plip.
Will try networking between two computers later today.
