The packages I installed are as follows;

xcfg.tgz
xfnts.tgz
xlib.tgz
xpm.tgz
xvg16.tgz
...........................................................................
..............................
If the fonts are ok,that's fine. Also,if the following is correct,

>I don't have X on BL1. I have an empty /usr/X11R6/lib directory but
>nothing else under X11R6, so it would be safe, I think, to delete >anything
>in X11R6 - rm -r * (?) and then mkdir lib.

then I'm fine as well.I'll just delete the files and lesson learned. But I
really need to know if the XF86Config was over written.I looked at it
before and after installing the packages and it has a lot of lines, but none
seem to have changed. That file emailed to me would be nice,I could compare
them.
Also, although I flubbed badly the first try,the only DOS on this system
was in what is now the swap partition and that didn't stay long, the lilo
instructions were good and I used them. Both partitions are now linux and it
boots from lilo. The other methods do make it easy, but I wanted linux only
and got it,and am learning bit by bit what it can do and I like it.Thank you
guys,this is experience is great.
David
