BL3 works *better* than BL1 on old hardware. It even works
on a 386 with 3mb RAM. With 8mb RAM, you will be able to
run X (which is included in the base BL3).

Sorry, BL1 did not have an automatic uninstall capability (that
was added in BL2). If you want to remove packages, you need to
remove the files manually. MANIFEST.gz lists the names (and
locations) of all the files in each package.

What were the names of the packages you installed?
Fonts packages don't matter, they will work with any system

It depends on the package. Often the old files will not
be overwritten (particularly if they are more up-to-date).

If it were me, I'd reinstall from scratch.

All versions of BasicLinux begin on a DOS foundation, because
that is simpler for beginners. Once things are running smoothly,
it is certainly possible to boot with LILO (i.e. no DOS) instead
of loadlin.exe.

It might appear that BL3 is different because it runs from a
loop file (fs.img) sitting on a DOS partition. However, BL1
and BL2 also ran from a file (baslinux.gz) sitting on a DOS
partition. You need DOS to use baslinux.gz; you need DOS to
use fs.img. However, once you install BL1/BL2/BL3 to its own
HD partition, you can boot directly with LILO (if you really
want to).

Cheers,
Steven
