Dear gfsomsel,

Two times now, you have made an attack on me and on a particular faith that you ascribe to me. Please stop that, and focus your attention on the subject and not on the person.

Best regards

It is not true that "This version (what I write in the paragraph
below) of the name of God is not supported by scholars". Please take
a look at Buchanan G. W. (1988). "Some unfinished business with the
Dead Sea Scrolls", Revue de Qumran, 13:49-52. Buchanan draws about
the same conclusions that I do in the paragraph below. But would you
say that Buchanan is not a scholar?

You're a real "Johnny One-note" aren't you? Do you have any other interests? I frankly think that this obsession with the tetragrammaton goes beyond your Arian heresy and heads straight for paganism. It's as though you think that waving the magic wand of the tetragrammaton over things is going make a big difference. This is an attempt at the practice of magic, not faith.

I did not attack your faith onlist. I simply stated that I knew where you were coming from and I was not buying your presuppositions. You on the other hand have continued to assert that the use of LORD for the tetragrammaton was due to trinitarian considerations which I denied. It actually has to do with Jewish practice and the loss of the knowledge of the pronunciation of the name. You continue to persist in this calumny. I took the matter offlist to respond to you personally yet you continued to respond to the list. Offlist I did respond to your faith position which I am fully entitled to do offlist. Since you seem to desire to calumniate me before the list, I will therefore publish my response to you onlist.
You seem to have but one concern -- the tetragrammaton. I think this is not worthy of spending any further time and effort discussing. This discussion is ended.

I suppose sometimes it is unclear whether a particular
piece of correspondence was made on-list or off-list,
especially in the heat of the moment, but please double-
check and do not copy off-list messages to the list.

Polycarp

Yes, I should have used the word, transliterate not translate, however this
does not get away from the fact that the translators as declared in the
preface to the RSV have stated, "the use of any proper name for the one
and only God as though there were other gods from whom he had to be
distinguished was discontinued in Judaism before the Christian era and is
entirely inappropriate for the universal faith of the Christian Church"
(preface page 9)

This statement flies in the face of the Psalmist Psalm 82:6, Psalm 86:8,
Jeremiah 7:18, Christ John 10:34 and Paul 1Cor 8:5. We know by the
translation or if you will the transliteration of these words what is being
referred to, but this is the very reason why the angel in Exodus 3 when
representing Yahweh said, "Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel,
The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the
God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is
my memorial unto all generations"

Now if this is inappropriate to the Christian Church, possibly, no, more
than probably there is something wrong with the Christian Church.

It could be argued that this is off topic but in reality it is very much on
topic because here we have a group of TRANSLATORS that have failed in their
responsibility to protect the appropriateness of the universal faith of the
Christian Church. Now you also say that Christianity came from Judaism, the
memorial name given to Moses for all generations was and is fundamental to
Judaism and Christianity. Here we have TRANSLATORS that have decided for
the appropriateness of the universal faith of the Christian Church failing
to correctly transliterate and translate not only the memorial name but
also the titles of Yahweh the Elohim of Israel.

So what is the real reason why the translators in their wisdom or lack of
it did not translate or transliterate the Name and Titles of the God of
Israel?

An interesting matter indeed.

Lew Osborne
