Unfortunately, I use facebook because I reach people I will not reach
anywhere else. And google+ is clunky, true. So is facebook, but it still
reaches more people. Twitter too. I hope that some of these other sites
become more user friendly so more people use them. I signed up for diaspora,
added a bunch of friends, then lost my interface web site name, and there is
no way I'll ever find it again I guess. Sigh. There is a trade off - reach
more people regarding permaculture? Or stop using facebook? Thanks for these
interesting comments - all food for thought.

Subject: Re: [permaculture] Sth East Asian Regional Conference

G'day,
I would have thought that using a Facebook Event Page would be a great
place from which to launch due to its ubiquity these days including with
many in SE Asia with the notable exception of China. If you want to manage
event bookings and attendees I'd recommend Eventbrite which we've been very
happy with. It synchs in with various social media very well and is great
for a non i-savvy person (which I consider myself to be) as its all wizards
to set up and manage: it will even set up the FB page if memory serves me
correctly. Shopify is another mob we've been using for e-commerce and its
even easier but not as good as Eventbrite for event mgt. Great to set up a
website where u are selling goods online however in our experience but
others might have found otherwise. I personally find google + clunky and I
think that's why FB is dominating the space currently.

Linked to this thread somewhat is that IMO the premium folks to mimic in
the marketing of Permaculture Edu services sector are Milkwood
Permaculture. They have an excellent online presence and strategy and their
reach is as good as anyone. They've worked hard at for some years now, and
I often remark to folks that if you want to benchmark someone in this field
then they are it. They do have i-savvy however but these days it easier
than ever to do this stuff than it has been before thanks to the
aforementioned marketing sites and the various social media.

Good luck and hope it sorts itself out.

Cheers,

Darren

Veterans Transition Corps, in alliance with Education Without Borders, Green
Warrior Permaculture, VETS_CAFE/Abundance Consulting, will be
conducting a Permaculture Design Course for military veterans August
8-21 in Oregon City, Oregon.

This event will be facilitated by
Australian Veteran Steve Cran of Green Warrior Permaculture, and
assisted by US Army Veteran Deston Denniston of Abundance Consulting.
Lodging and food will be provided. Together they bring 40+ years of
permaculture, small farms and bush skills to the training, spanning 3
continents and every arable climate.

This course is valued at
$1150. PDC’s are typically priced at the lowest rate a teacher and
landowner can offer without loss. Due to an exceptional gift,
our event will be able to offer this event to military veterans
regardless of their ability to pay.

Donations are gratefully encouraged, but no vet
will be turned away based solely on lack of funds. We are looking for
community minded vets who will bring benefit to their communities and
service organizations by integrating permaculture into their daily lives
and work. We are looking specifically for team trainers who will be
able to embrace this work and continue to propagate it in their circles.

This will be a hands on course, with much in the way of learning by doing.

If you would like to attend this course, or know a vet who would, call
360-388-1242, or email Veterans Transition Corps at
info@veteranstransitioncorps.org.

Peace,

Deston Denniston, M.S., C.P.I.

Steward, Abundance Permaculture Consulting

I have some (for SEA rare) seedling trees to give away for free. I live in
the Bangkok area. I would like to share the information. But I do not have a
facebook account, nor do I wish to create one just for this purpose.

Would it be possible to start some other form of info sharing, like a
yahoo-group?

Hell no, not the awful yahoo. Nothing but problems there.

Use this list.
Use Google resources and Google+ - no where near as big a pain in the
ass to set up, maintain, back up and use as Farcehook. Their comments
editor is the worst anywhere online. Farcehook is just barely usable;
I use it only to stay in tough with a few friends but the interface is a
farce, a joke.

Why not use this list and/or start a Google+ circle and page, or use
Permies.

Hi guys
Ok, I am not a tech savvie person (didn't learn to use a computer
until I was 26). Prior to setting up the Permaculture SE Asia facebook
page I asked on this site for suggestions about how to go about it.
Got none.
After I set it up (because many permies are on FB and it's a something
I know how to use) and then notified the list LL told me that I could
consider using Google+.
I had a look and just got confused.?
I responded and said that I am not very savvy in this area and if
anyone else out there in cyber land would like to set up something for
sharing information in SE Asia - excellent! no problems! I have no
desire to 'own' this and would just like to have us sharing
information.?
So, the offer is still there. I will migrate to some other forum if
someone out there wants to set it up.
cheersflick??

Apart from the useless interface Facebook requires that anyone reading
content, i.e. your PC SE Asia FB Group be a member of Facebook. Many
will not be willing to go that route in order to participate.

It would be more than appropriate to use this list for your group though
posts will get mixed in with everything else.

I will try to set up a Google+ public page for it though I think that
any participation in Google resources requires a Google or GMail account
or some sort of openID account or ID. That's really no more difficult
than subscribing to this PC list; upside is that those resources used
can be made viewable by the public or made private if desired.

I like Google Groups. They are straightforward forums which can accept
file/image attachments. They can have multiple owners. You can mirror
posts in a blog with same name as group, add also a Google Site and
Google Docs for additional functions.

I can set up a Google Group. What name would you prefer:
permacultureseasia or pcseasia or something else?

Non-gmail accountholders may still be able to subscribe to a Google
Group. Someone needs to try and let us know.

I just set up pcseasia (short names are good). It is located here:

pcseasia (Permaculture Southeast Asia)
https://groups.google.com/group/pcseasia

I have invited Felicity and Daniel to join and can make either/both
owners of the forum.

This is easy to use and offers many useful functions. Of "everything out
there" I think this is the best, in a way better than ibiblio,
who now sends those wanting a forum at ibiblio to Google Groups.

I have it configure to be open to the public for message archive viewing
though post require that you be a member. Anyone can join the group
though I can change that to by-invitation-only. Let me know if anyone
has questions or suggestions about this resource.

Thanks Lawrence
Probably better if someone else is administrator - if Daniel would
like to be or you are happy to stay on I'me fine with that.?
Will post the link to the Google Group on the FB page so people can
migrate there if they want.
When I tried to access the groups I had to set up a gmail account.

I belong to and manage quite a few mailing lists and they are great for
long and sustained conversations.

But for reaching out to, finding, and engaging new people, Facebook is
without peer at the present time.  As of MAy 2012, it has 900 million
users, which means that individuals using FB are potentially open to
meeting and engaging likeminded souls among nearly a billion people.

Facebook is great for organizing meetings and events.

Facebook is not great for long and sustained discussions.

It is an appropriate tool for what it is.  Mailing lists like this one
are appropriate tools for what they are.

People who don't want to meet new people should avoid Facebook. People
who do want to meet and engage new people, who perhaps never would have
found them otherwise, should use Facebook.

Generally, I think organizations need --

+ a website,
+ a mailing list discussion group,
+ a Facebook page, and
+ a Twitter account

assuming you want to aggressively participate in the public conversation
out there.  Each of these four platforms has its own strengths,
weaknesses, uses, and potential populations.
